The Liberec Regional Hospital has moved on to the next phase of construction of the Emergency Medicine Center. One-fifth of the foundation work remains to be completed. Construction had been hindered by an old boiler room, which began to be demolished on Tuesday.
The old boiler room is located on the edge of the hospital grounds behind Pavilion D. Although construction of the Emergency Medicine Center itself began in the spring of 2023, work has so far focused on the front section facing Husova Street. The rear section was blocked by the original boiler room building. Demolition of the building began on Tuesday.
“This marks a critical milestone in the construction schedule, because if it had not been possible to demolish the old boiler house, there would have been delays in the construction of the Emergency Medicine Center,” says Petr Šmakal, chief construction engineer at the Liberec Regional Hospital.
“The demolition should take 30 days. Rough landscaping work at the demolition site should take another 30 days,” he adds in an interview with Český rozhlas Liberec.
New Energy Center
A new energy center had to be built in the basement of the hospital parking garage. It contains over 800 meters of piping, 12 kilometers of wiring, and hybrid boilers. And as deputy construction manager Ondřej Jandejsek points out, there is also a new backup power source in case of power outages.
“This technological equipment keeps the hospital’s vital systems running immediately. There are two of them, just in case something happens. There’s a large impeller there. In the event of a power outage, there are diesel engines that keep the impeller turning and continue to generate electricity,” adds Jandejsek.
The new boiler room has a capacity of 12.5 megawatts. It supplies heat and hot water to 40 buildings on the hospital campus.
